Clear Cut Classroom: Lab Grown vs Natural Diamonds

Welcome to The Clear Cut Classroom where we take deep dives into all things diamonds (and jewelry)! In this episode, Olivia dives into the difference between lab-grown and natural diamonds. Are lab-grown diamonds worth it? Watch the full video below:

At The Clear Cut we focus on investment pieces -- jewelry holds its value and you can pass on for generations. We do not work with lab-grown diamonds. We only work with natural untreated, GIA certified diamonds. So, why don’t we work with lab-grown?

Natural diamonds, although more expensive, have an inherent value. If you spend $10,000 on a diamond, it will hold its value forever. In comparison, you could save and purchase a lab-grown diamond for $7,000. However that lab-grown diamond will lose its value because as technology improves, the price of production decreases  and the prices are dropping like crazy! What you pay for a lab-grown diamond might go down by half next year. At the end of the day, lab-grown diamonds are overpriced for their lack of inherent value.

I like to equate it to an Hermes Birkin bag. A Birkin bag is quite an investment piece. You can get a knock off that is even made of the same leather and many people might think it is real. You could have saved 50% on the fake Birkin bag, but they will have no inherent resale value in the knock off. But the real one will hold its value across time.

Plus, since lab-grown diamonds are so new, we don’t know how they're going to age! Reports have been coming out that some lab-grown diamonds change color overtime. Some that I have personally seen have a haze over them and look muted when put next to a real diamond. They don’t have the same type of sparkle when I look at them, as an expert.

All that being said, knock off diamonds and fake gems have been around forever. However, nothing has replaced the real deal. I believe that as more lab-grown diamonds are made, they will just be in a different category. Real diamonds and gems will never be replaced.
