Cushion cut diamonds are a popular choice for a diamond engagement ring. This cut is a classic, resembling a square shape with rounded corner, almost like a pillow cushion.
Elongated cushion cuts have rose to popularity recently as we have noticed more requests for elongated ratio diamonds. So how do we attain the perfect elongated cushion cut? The ratio is the key element to understand.
The length to width proportion for a traditionally square cushion cut usually falls between a 1.00 - 1.10 length to width ratio. The way we get that number is by taking the length of the diamond in millimeters and dividing it by the width of the diamond.

Elongated shapes are usually higher ratios and become more rare. In the past, elongated cushion cuts typically had ratios from 1.15 - 1.25. Today, more requests are coming in for diamonds in the 1.30 - 1.40 ratio range. Again, the higher the more rare!

The ratio is a personal preference, it all depends on how you like the diamond flatters your finger. Just remember there will be lots of options with a square cushion cut diamond compared to elongated cuts. Either way, both styles are beautiful and shine beautifully in any engagement ring design.
