Don't Buy An Emerald Cut Until You've Read This

Welcome to The Clear Cut Classroom, where we take deep dives into all things diamonds and jewelry! Love the look of an emerald cut diamond? We are sharing everything you need to know for your emerald cut diamond engagement ring. Emerald cut diamonds are a classic shape and they have been the trend this year with so many beautiful celebrity engagement rings! Emerald cuts are a great choice to always stay in style and feel your most elegant self.

Emerald cut diamonds are loved for a reason. These stones feature cut corners & step cut facets. Step cut facets are the parallel spacings in the diamond that create a very regal “hall of mirrors” effect, so classic! These stones are great to have as a solitaire or in a three stone setting, you can truly play around with all the features of an emerald cut diamond. Here are a few recommendations for finding the perfect diamond.

One factor to consider is the diamond’s length to width ratio. For a classic emerald shape, staying in between a 1.3-1.4 length to width ratio is perfect. If you’re feeling for more of a square shape, almost like an Asscher cut, stay below a 1.3 ratio.  If you love emerald cuts for their longer rectangular shape and really want to emphasize finger coverage, an elongated ratio is best between the 1.4-1.6 range. Put some thought into whether you want a square-ish, elongated or classic emerald cut diamond, then we can work with other features of the diamond for the best bargain.

Another major factor to consider is the diamond's color & clarity combination. With emerald cuts, you can mask color very well. By going lower in color range, clarity is the key feature to pay attention to.

The diamond color range starts at D to Z, D being the most clear and brilliant and Z being the last grade of clear diamonds before it becomes a fancy yellow diamond. For emerald cuts, stay between a D through J color grade. You can even take an emerald cut up to a K or L color grade without getting too much of a yellow hue.

Step cut facets are the emerald cut’s prized quality. If you love emerald cuts, you probably adore this feature. Keep in mind that not much brilliance comes from their facets, really making inclusions more visible than, for example, a round brilliant diamond. It is important to prioritize clarity with emerald cuts so make sure it is eye clean! For clarity range, VS1 and up are great to stick to. Try not to go for SI1 or below, inclusions will probably be more visible on the surface and inside the diamond.
