Your Guide to Round Brilliant Diamonds

Welcome to The Clear Cut Classroom, where we take deep dives into all things diamonds and jewelry! Are you shopping around for a round brilliant diamond? This is what you need to learn about this diamond in order to get the best bargain and perfect sparkle for your ring!

We know about the 4 C's of a diamond: cut, carat, color & clarity. These are the guidelines to follow so we know all about the diamond's value and appearance. Round brilliant diamonds are the perfect sparkle for an engagement ring because of its totally symmetrical and classic shape. Therefore, it is super important to pay close attention to these details so your diamond is the best!

With round brilliant diamonds, these are the only cuts that have a cut grade. All other diamonds have a polish and symmetry grade but round brilliants have the most standardization because of their shape. Look for a triple excellent round brilliant diamond. This means the diamond met the standards for ideal proportion, brilliance and sparkle, all given scores of Excellent. We do not want disproportioned and lackluster round brilliants, so pay close attention to its cut grade amongst all of its other characteristics.

Luckily, we can move in range of color for these diamonds. Round brilliant diamonds are a gorgeous cut that face up very white so color is a factor that can be compromised. Stick to the colorless and near colorless range, being D-J on the color scale. Sometimes going a color grade of K or L can work for these cuts before color starts to become apparent. Get options for different color round brilliants and you will find what you love!

Round brilliant diamonds can camouflage inclusions really well so here are our thoughts about clarity to look for. For clarity, VS2 and up are going to be great, inclusions will not be visible and the stone will radiate beautifully. Because of their great masking quality, we can step down into SI1 and SI2 territory, as long as the diamond is eye-clean. If you go SI1 or SI2, you can always go back and maximize other characteristics like better color grade and larger carat weight!

Speaking of carat weight, these diamonds are a perfect example of being true to size. We do not like to correlate size to carat weight all the time because some diamonds can look larger than their weight and all hold weight differently. However, a round brilliant diamond's carat weight can imply a larger look. This is different between all diamonds so do your research and find out what you fall in love with. Just keep this in mind: the heavier the carat weight, the possibility of a larger looking diamond! Who doesn't love that?
