Jenny Friedman, is an inspiring and witty gal! We chat about Partner at Supernode Ventures, a generalist fund investing in entrepreneurs to help transform the way people live, work and socialize. Jenny gives us insight on how start-ups get funding, what different terms really mean, the power of asking for what you want, and how to not take yourself too seriously.
VC is a difficult industry to break into. Jenny went to the University of Pennsylvania and her career started at Goldman Sachs. To her, the network and connections she made were invaluable. She was asked to do asset management, but she realized she was more interested in venture capital, so she switched paths. She knew she was interested in early stage and applied to Columbia Business School. She got in early and joined Minibar, an alcohol delivery service, before she attended business school. She learned a lot about marketplaces and e-commerce there. Then, she got introductions to LPs from a close friend and learned that sometimes all you have to do is ask -- that made all the difference for her!
From that, she worked at Eniac through business school. Another important lesson -- you HAVE to just go! She talks about a networking event that ended up being a crucial opportunity. She met her partner there! And now their firm is thriving two years later! Don’t be afraid to put yourself out there! Jenny talks about the ins and outs of VC -- the difference between pre seed and seed, the valuation craze, and the overall climate in the space!
Jenny draws her spark from her parents -- their work ethic and drive inspires her every day. Being in NYC, introducing people, and helping entrepreneurs grow their network is her passion!
